The Self-Perception Principle

The variable that determines which pathway is accessible is whether the person's self-concept is already in tension with the belief. When it is — as with a manager who sees themselves as fair, or a woman who felt the limiting message of "women's place" as unjust — contrary evidence or a new framework can create the dissonance that opens change. When the belief and the identity are fused, no informational pathway reaches it. Only structural change that forces new experience can begin to work.
